Built in 1751, the cottage is set in a quiet courtyard in the centre of the Market town of Leyburn. The small and historic town has a superb weekly market, a wide variety of shops, pubs, and restaurants. All of these attractions are situated very close to the cottage. Leyburn is an excellent base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales, which boast some of the most beautiful scenery in England, and the Yorkshire Moors, an area of stunning moorland and charming villages on the way to the east coast. Indeed, the east coast is not too far away, Historic Richmond is only 8 miles away, York only 35 miles away, and there are plenty of enjoyable walks within this area of Penhill and East Witton Fell. The famous Shawl itself (see our Local History page) is a mere 200 yards from the cottage, with magnificent views of Lower Wensleydale. The surrounding countryside offers a vast array of activities including touring by car, walking, fishing, golf, mountain biking, pony trekking, and some spectacular show caves. If history is your passion, then you will enjoy visiting the many nearby castles, stately homes and museums.
